Is your S&OP implementation struggling?
Many organizations face challenges when trying to implement or sustain an effective Sales and Operations Planning (S&OP) process. If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Failed attempts at S&OP are common but not inevitable. The root cause often boils down to failing to answer two critical questions:
Do you have a clear vision of your “end state”?
Do you have a defined path to get there?
We call this approach ClarAbility – being clear on what to do and having the ability to achieve it. Ironically, this clarity and ability are also essential for a well-functioning S&OP process itself. Let’s explore how this works and how you can make meaningful change in your organization.
The Path to Change: From X to Y
Imagine mapping your S&OP effectiveness on a graph, with time on the X-axis and effectiveness on the Y-axis. Here’s the reality: if you don’t change, your effectiveness will decline as the world moves forward, which is the Red Line. In other words:
Coasting is a downhill process.

Your goal is to move from your current state, X, to a higher level of effectiveness, Y. Unfortunately, the journey from X to Y is rarely a straight line. In fact, things often get worse before they get better. This is the Dashed Blue Line of change. Why does this happen? Implementing change increases the workload on an already busy organization, leading to initial setbacks. If expectations aren’t managed, this dip can result in loss of momentum and disengagement.

The Three Choices at the Bottom
As you hit the low point of the change curve (the green line), you’ll face three options:
Abandon the project and go back to X. This feels safe because X is familiar. But staying at X means falling further behind.

Stay stuck at W. This is the worst-case scenario. You’ve sunk too much into the project to admit failure, but you lack the momentum to move forward.
Press on to Y. To succeed, you need:
A shared vision of what Y looks like and why it matters.
Confidence in the process to get there.

Unfortunately, many projects stall at W. S&OP implementations are not immune to this risk.
The Law of Serial Projects
One of the most effective strategies to reduce the struggles of change is based on the Law of Serial Projects. This principle suggests breaking a large project into smaller, manageable components that each deliver value. Completing these smaller projects sequentially allows your team to:
Focus resources.
Achieve quicker wins.
Maintain momentum.
The benefits of this approach are clear: the Dark Blue Line on the graph shows how tackling smaller projects in series can deliver faster results and reduce the pain of change.

Align Your Team and Stay the Course
If your S&OP implementation is off-track, step back and ensure that:
You have a clear vision of your end state.
Your path forward is well-defined.
This alignment will help your team stay focused on shared objectives and move confidently toward success.
